International financial institutions, including multilateral development banks, are a central pillar in the institutional architecture supporting intergovernmental development efforts. IFIs finance projects and programs consistent with their individual mandates, all of which converge in realising agreed global goals, namely sustaining peace and improving lives. These two lectures look at how this state of affairs came about and what we can learn from the enquiry process. The lectures delve into the history of IFs and the other international organisations that influenced their evolution.
The lectures critically assess how thinkers and events influenced today's IFIs, in particular how their purposes and governance arrangements have come to be shaped.
